A native of Alabama, Dr. Ulm graduated from Auburn University and subsequently obtained his medical degree from the University of Alabama, School of Medicine in 1999. Dr. Ulm completed neurosurgery residency at the University of Florida, as well as additional fellowship training in Microsurgical Anatomy under the tutelage of world-renowned, Dr. Albert Rhoton. Dr. Ulm also completed an additional fellowship for Vascular and Endovascular Neurosurgery at Vanderbilt University.
Dr. Ulm's clinical interests include the treatment of brain vascular disease with traditional open surgery and endovascular techniques. Another area of focus is the treatment of complex spinal problems with minimally invasive surgery.
Prior to joining HW Neurological Institute, Dr. Ulm founded the interventional cerebrovascular program at the Medical Center of Central Georgia, performing the regions first aneurysm coiling, brain bypass procedure and interventional stroke treatment. He served as assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at Louisiana State University in New Orleans, instructing residents and fellows in neurosurgery, endovascular (interventional) neurosurgery and continues to train tomorrow's neurosurgeons in an ongoing microsurgical anatomy lab.
Research interests include the pathogenesis of aneurysm formation, biomechanics of spinal disease, clinical outcome measures after aneurysm treatment and microsurgical anatomy.
