Making A Difference In Patient Lives Is What Drives Me Daily

A native of Los Angeles, California, Dr. Mathews moved to Nashville to study medicine at Vanderbilt University after completing his undergraduate degree at UCLA. His core studies were neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, biomechanics, as well cardiorespiratory physiology, ultimately graduating with Honors in Kinesiology. He completed his residency in Neurological Surgery at Vanderbilt in 1997 and has since been a leader in treating spinal and cranial maladies in Middle Tennessee and its surrounding communities.

He has been on staff for several years at the Tristar Centennial Hospital, and St. Thomas West and Midtown hospitals, and currently is the Director of Neurosurgical Services at Tristar Southern Hills Hospital. Outside his midtown office, he has outlying clinics in Brentwood, Columbia and Lebanon, Tennessee and has consistent referrals from southern Kentucky, West and East Tennessee, as well as Northern Alabama communities. He enjoys treating cranial, spinal, and peripheral nerve pathology, and has a keen focus on minimally invasive approaches to spinal pathology, via anterior, lateral, as well as posterior approaches. He has been a community leader on motion sparing solutions to cervical and lumbar pathology.

He remains active with the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and the North American Spine Society. He has given multiple lectures on various spinal procedures, is often consulted for expert testimony in his field.
